Johann Heinrich (Henry) was the first of the Thomasmeyer children to come to America. He settled in Quincy and started a trunk manufacturing business, the Thomasmeyer Trunk Mfg Co. He prospered so, that he sent for his parents and siblings to come over from Germany to be with him in the New World. Younger brother Frederick eventually purchased a 1/2 interest in the business and took over after Henry's death in 1874. At this time Frederick renamed the business the "Gem City Trunk Manufacturing Company."
Apparently Henry had to file emigration papers twice (see research notes). He filed to leave on 10 March 1857, then again on 12 March 1857. He noted that he had 3 cousins living in Cincinnati. In the records it notes that he was a "resident on Bretholds site in Bohmte".
