Frederick came to America upon the urging of his brother, Henry, who had started a successful trunk manufacturing business. Frederick began working for his brother and at the age of 21, and purchased a 1/2 interest in the business. This relation was maintained until Henry's death, at which time the business was incorporated as the "Gem City Trunk Manufacturing Company."
Frederick was a Republican alderman for 2 terms, approximately from 1890 until his death in 1896. He was an active Mason and member of St. Peter's Evangelical Lutheran Church on 9th and York in Quincy.
His residence in 1881 is listed as 154 S. 9th St., Quincy. The family home was later located a few blocks south, at 830 Kentucky St.
Frederick married Wilhelmina "Minnie" Lagemann, daughter of Hermann H. Lagemann and Elizabeth Kuester, on 18 Nov 1875 in Quincy, Adams Co., Illinois.
