J. Christian, born in Blankenburg, moved to Hamburg at age 19, in 1852. He was registered in the Bürgereid in Hamburg on 9 January 1857. The Bürgereid was a "citizen oath" for the city, open only to young men. It gave political rights, but some financial duties came with it also. The first writing of the Bürgereid was in 1410. Today, the Hamburg parliament is named "Bürgerschaft."
