  General Notes:

Roger Bigod (c. 1144/1150-1221) was the son of Hugh Bigod, 1st Earl of Norfolk and succeeded to the earldom of Norfolk in 1189, was confirmed in his earldom and other honours by Richard I, for his claim had been disputed by his step-mother in the reign of Henry II. King Richard also sent him to France as an ambassador in 1189.

He took part in the negotiations for the release of Richard from prison, and after the king's return to England became justiciar. The earl was one of the leaders of the baronial party which obtained John's assent to Magna Carta, and his name appears among the signatories to this document.

Around Christmas 1181 Roger married Ida de Tosney, a former mistress of King Henry II, and by her had a number of children including:

1. Hugh
2. William Bigod
3. Roger Bigod
4. John Bigod
5. Ralph Bigod
6. Margaret Bigod
7. Mary Bigod
8. Ida Bigod

Roger married Ida Plantagenet, daughter of Hamelin Plantagenet and Isabel de Warenne, about 1185. (Ida Plantagenet was born in 1154 in Norfolk, Norfolk, England.)
